Mooving Education Forward: Students Welcome Cow to Learn About Food Production

A cow and a student at SGHS

Farm life came to Strathfield Girls today - Our Year 8 Paddock to Plate Students were exposed to the life of a dairy farmer during the Smart Cow Incursion.

During the incursion students learnt about the needs of dairy cows and how farmers satisfy those needs, how technology has changed/improved milk harvesting on farm, create a flow chart of the distribution chain of milk from farm to fridge and about the processing levels involved with milk and the health benefits. The girls also had the opportunity to get some hands-on practical experiences during the session where they got to milk the two adult cows Queen and Memory and use the milk to manufacture butter and soft curd cheese.

The girls thoroughly enjoyed this experience and finished of the session by interacting with the 3-month-old calf named number 123 – the girls were asked for them to come up with a suitable name for her. The suggestions were Carol, Betty, Chanel, Jersey, Dolly. Wonder which name Farmer Jess will choose? She was such a cutie! We all wanted to take her home.
