NSW Board Of Studies Requirements

Strathfield Girls High School follows the curriculum requirements laid down by the Board of Studies in New South Wales.

Year 7 and Year 8

All Year 7 and 8 students study English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, PD/Health/PE, Visual Arts, Music, Design and Technology and languages.  In both Years 7 and 8, all students will also study Living Skills and participate in sport which is a mandatory component of the Years 7 – 10 curriculum.

Year 9 and Year 10

Year 9 allows students to start to specialise in subjects which are of particular interest to them.  A wide range of electives is available for students to choose for Years 9 and 10.  Students choose three elective subjects for study during Years 9 and 10.  The core subjects English, Mathematics, Science, Australian History and Geography, including Civics and Citizenship and PD/Health/PE continue for all students.  In addition, all students in both Years 9 and 10 will also participate in sport. Years 7 to 10 of secondary education lead to the award of a school certificate.

Beyond Year 10

Students are required to complete year 10 and then they have a number of options in which to participate until at least age 17. Students who choose to undertake studies that lead to the award of the Higher School Certificate usually complete the Higher School Certificate over two years. However, flexible study is available, allowing students up to five years to complete the Higher School Certificate.

Students may wish to follow an academic pathway leading to university or equivalent tertiary education.  For this group of students, Strathfield Girls High School offers subjects across all key learning areas which are studied with rigour and in depth.

Students may select to undertake a mix of traditional academic subjects together with more vocationally focussed subjects either at school or TAFE. VET subjects at school such as Hospitality, Retail Services, Business Services or Information Technology, are dual accredited by the NSW Board of Studies and National Employment Organisations.

Students may choose to do an apprentiship or a traineeship or may choose to undertake full time paid employment (average 25 hours/week) or a combination of any post Year 10 options.

Clearly, students are able to select options which allow for a range of post school pathways, including tertiary study at university, TAFE, entry to full time employment or combinations of work with further study.

Sport

• All students other than Year 12 students are required to take part in sport during the year.  Sport is as important as any other subject. From Years 7 to 10 Sport is a prerequisite for the award of the School Certificate and for Years 7 to 11, a requirement of the Department of Education and Training.  Students must be changed into correct sport uniform.
• Years 7 and 8 participate in an integrated program which includes swimming, gymnastics, and games.
• Years 9, 10 and 11 participate in a recreational sports program on Monday afternoons.
