Udderly Amazing: Moo-ving Lessons on Farming and Food at School!

Student next to a cow

Farm life came to Strathfield Girls last week - Our Year 8 Paddock to Plate Students were exposed to the life of a dairy farmer during the Smart Cow  incursion.

During the incursion students learnt about the needs of dairy cows and  ow  farmers satisfy those needs, how technology has changed/improved milk  harvesting on farm, create a flow chart of the distribution chain of  milk from farm to fridge and about the processing levels involved with  milk and the health benefits. The girls also had the opportunity to get some hands-on practical experiences during the session where they got to milk  the two adult cows and use the milk to manufacture butter and soft curd  cheese.

The girls thoroughly enjoyed this experience and finished of the session by interacting with the 3-month-old calf named number 467 – the girls were asked by farmer Jess to come up with a suitable name for her. The suggestions were Daisy, Jessie, Bambi, Britney and many more but the winner was….. Belinda! She was such a cutie! We all wanted to take her home.
