Year 8 History Report

Year 8 have been learning about Viking longships. These ships were strong, lightweight, and beautifully shaped to skim quickly through the water. The ships were designed to come right up on the beach so that men could jump out and start fighting straight away. They were built of wood and made waterproof with tar from pine trees, and the square sails were made of woven wool and were often brightly coloured. When the wind was wrong for sailing, the longships were rowed by teams of oarsmen. This week, students in 8I labelled the features of a Viking longship and created their very own Viking longship model.
