What a fantastic start to 2019, which is on track to becoming a very musical year. All our Extra-Curricular Music Ensembles at Strathfield Girls are up and running.
This year our School Orchestra boasts record numbers with lots of new Year 7 members. The 2019 SGHS Orchestra now has a full String Section of Violins, Viola and Cellos, along with a full Wind Section of Flutes, Clarinets, Recorder and Saxophones, and a new Percussion Section. Rehearsal of new, challenging pieces is well underway with Mr Lewis waving his conductor’s baton, and we are looking forward to lots of performances throughout the year.
The Senior Vocal Ensemble, conducted by Ms Fong, is already gearing up for their first performance at the annual ‘In Concert – Secondary Choral Festival’, held at the prestigious Sydney Town Hall. I would encourage all parents whose daughters are taking part in this wonderful performance opportunity to purchase tickets and see their girls perform at this beautiful and historic venue. ‘In Concert’ is a large Choral and Symphonic concert, run every year by The Arts Unit.
Our Stage Band (Jazz Band), conducted by Theo Bonny, and our Percussion Ensemble, conducted by Lloyd Gyi have also started rehearsals in preparation for a busy year of performance.
If your daughter has not yet signed up to join one a Music Ensembles, I encourage parents and students to contact the Creative Arts Department at Strathfield Girls High School.
2019 Music Ensembles, and rehearsal times are as follows;
School Orchestra – Monday afternoons 3:15 – 4:30 (we finish in time to catch 4:33 bus from school)
Senior Choir – Tuesday mornings 7:30 – 8:30
Stage Band (Jazz Band) – Wednesday afternoons 3:15 – 4:15
Percussion Ensemble – Thursday afternoons 3:15 – 4:15
Strathfield Divas (Yr 7 Choir) – Wednesday lunch
String Quartet – Monday lunch
Senior Acapella – Thursday lunch
Participation in the Music Ensemble program requires a lot of commitment and dedication by both students and staff. It is a very rewarding program. It is also compulsory for all Elective Music students from years 9 to 12. Due to many upcoming performances this year and respect for the hard work of our teachers and conductors, we ask that student’s personal activities and appointments do not interfere or clash with set, weekly rehearsal times.
